Small steps matter

Big changes rarely happen in one day. More often they are the result of small, patient steps taken one after another, and caring for our skin is no different.

A swollen lump between the shoulder blades can be uncomfortable and worrying, especially when it is hard to see and someone else has to check it for you.

Family members are often the first to notice it. A partner or friend sees a red bump on the back and says it is time to have it looked at.

These lumps are usually cysts. They start from a blocked follicle and fill with keratin over time, forming a round sac under the skin with a small dark opening on top.

Squeezing a cyst at home is tempting, but it can push the contents deeper and spread infection. A warm compress and a clean dressing are much safer first steps.
