Finish what you start

Starting something is easy. Finishing it properly is what makes the difference, and that is true in life as much as it is in a dermatologist’s office.

When a cyst is treated, the most important part comes at the very end: removing the thin sac that produced the cyst in the first place.

A back cyst may look like a simple bump from the outside, but underneath it there is a pocket lined with skin cells that keep making keratin.

If only the contents are squeezed out, the pocket stays behind. Weeks or months later it fills up again and the bump returns, often bigger than before.

That is why doctors use small tools such as forceps and scissors to gently lift the sac wall and separate it from the healthy tissue around it.
