Patience pays off

Blackheads on the back are another very common problem. They are open pores filled with oil, and the dark color comes from the oil reacting with air, not from dirt. That is why washing alone often does not make them disappear.

Sweat, tight clothes and backpacks can make back blackheads worse, because they trap heat and oil against the skin. Showering soon after exercise and wearing loose cotton clothes can help keep the pores clearer.

Some blackheads become unusually large. Doctors call one of these a dilated pore of Winer, a single wide pore with a big plug of keratin inside. It looks dramatic, but it is harmless and can be cleared quickly by a professional.

The good news is that most of these problems can be treated. Gentle exfoliation, products with salicylic acid and regular skin care can reduce new blackheads, while cysts that keep growing should be checked by a dermatologist.

Like many things in life, healthy skin takes patience. Small daily habits, taking care of problems early and getting help when something does not go away on its own all make a big difference over time.
