Whatever is waiting for you, face the day with a clear head. Problems on the surface are usually easier to fix than they feel.
In this photo a woman in her fifties looks away from the camera with a red, swollen lump on her cheek near the jawline, and a doctor holds gauze beside it.
A lump like this on the face is often an inflamed cyst or a deep, blocked pore. It forms when oil and dead skin cannot leave the follicle and build up underneath.
The lower cheek and jaw have many oil glands, and the skin there is touched, rubbed and rested on hands all day, which makes blockages more common.
When it flares up, the swelling can reach a few centimetres, feel hot and firm, and a small whitish head may appear slightly off centre as it comes closer to the surface.
