Plan before you act

The best results usually come from a good plan. Taking a moment to prepare before acting can save a lot of trouble later.

Doctors know this well. Before removing a large cyst from the back, they often draw a circle around it with a skin marker.

That line shows exactly where the cyst begins and ends, which is important when the lump is big and the skin over it is red and swollen.

Large back cysts form when a blocked follicle fills with keratin over months or years, slowly stretching the skin above it.

When they become inflamed, they can turn purple and painful, and a yellow head may appear in the centre where the cyst is close to bursting.
