A doctor will examine the swelling, press gently around it and ask how long it has been there, to be sure it is a cyst and not something else.
An inflamed cyst is usually numbed, opened with a small cut and drained, and the sac is removed so it does not fill up again later.
Afterwards the area is cleaned and covered with gauze. Keeping it clean and dry for a few days and changing the dressing helps it heal without trouble.
Washing the back well, using a long-handled brush and avoiding heavy lotions on the shoulders can lower the chance of new blockages forming.
Take heart and get it looked at early. The videos below show cysts on the back being treated by professionals.
