Two large, swollen lumps side by side on the back can look frightening, especially when they turn purple and start to show yellow heads.
These are usually inflamed cysts. Each one starts around a blocked follicle and slowly fills with keratin until it forms a sac under the skin.
When bacteria get inside, the cysts swell quickly and become hot, heavy and very painful, making it hard to lie on the back or sleep.
Pressing on them at home only pushes the infection deeper. A clean dressing and a visit to the doctor are much safer choices.
