It is natural to hope that a problem on our face will simply disappear by itself. Sometimes it does, but sometimes waiting only makes it bigger.
A cyst on the cheek is a good example. It may start as a small, firm bump and slowly become larger, redder and more tender over a few weeks.
The skin on the face has many oil glands, so blocked pores are common there. When a pore stays blocked deep under the surface, a cyst can form.
Sometimes these cysts develop one or two small openings on top. Through them the trapped material can slowly leak out, which often leads to repeated swelling.
Picking at a facial cyst is one of the most common mistakes. It can cause infection, make the redness spread and leave a scar on a very visible part of the body.
